A book of poems depicting the plight of people living with different mental illnesses, a video interview with an elderly lady who lives alone…
In the Dr Low Guat Tin national challenge, GB Girls tried to give voice to the most vulnerable members of our society through creative and inspiring entries.
Themed “Better Together, for a Better Tomorrow”, the competition received scores of artwork, writing, videos, and inventions, each aiming to educate, encourage, foster empathy, or imagine a better Singapore. Subjects of the competition entries included the elderly living alone, migrant workers, and people with disabilities or special needs.
“A Communication Glove” translates sign language into words, allowing people with speech disabilities to communicate with people who can’t understand sign language.
As Girls stepped into the shoes of the vulnerable to create meaningful entries, many responded to the social problems they had identified through whimsical, documentary-esque, and heart-wrenching works of art.
Among the many excellent entries, a poignant song written by GB Junior, Tanya Indira stole the judges’ hearts with its resonant lyrics and soulful vocals.
“A Song” went on to win the Junior Written Category.
Tanya describes how she hopes her winning entry will encourage the disabled:
“My song is about the journey of life of a disabled person and the setbacks he/she has to face to discover his/her true self. The vision of the song was that the main character has a flashback of the past and dreams of making a change in the world. This song aims to give the disabled an understanding that their disability does not define who they are but rather how they leave an impact on the world and a legacy others will remember. Through the lyrics ‘All you need is hearts to love and a soul to forgive’, this reminds us to love others unconditionally regardless of their background or status. I hope that my song will have the power to bring people of all walks of life together to form a rich mosaic of compassion and respect.”
